1.  Social Gambler: The majority of the people who gamble are social gamblers.  They gamble for entertainment and a little excitement.  They dedicate very little leisure time to   and their is not given excessive emphasis.  75% - 80% of the people who gamble are social gamblers.

2.  Problem Gambler: An individual who has crossed over the invisible line from social or controlled to dedicate more and more thoughts, time and money toward .  10% - 15% of the betting population will have some significant problems due to their behavior.

3.  Compulsive Gambler:  An individual who has an uncontrollable preoccupation and urge to gamble.  is the most important thing in their life.  In New Jersey statistics indicate 5% of gamblers are compulsive and without treatment and their lives will get progressively worse.

4.  Organized Crime(antipersonality type):  It is estimated that 4% of money wagered may originate from organized crime.  Organized crime entities launder illegal revenue at race tracks, casinos and through wagering.

5.  Professional Gambler:  An individual who makes their living through .  They bet in a control way, handle losses well and do not let interfere with normal activities.  One-half to one percent of gamblers are professional gamblers.

Like any other type of addiction, compulsive is progressive.  Once a person has crossed over the line, his and problems will only get worse.  It can never get any better as long as the person continues in his out of control behavior.
